University Park Robins

Robins Logo

Owner/Manager: Matt Court

Birthplace: Rochester, New York

Colleges: Elmira College; George Mason University; University of Denver

DDL Team Name Origin: I’m a diehard Dodger fan, and the Brooklyn Dodgers played as the Robins from 1914 through 1931. The team changed their name to the Robins in honor of their manager Wilbert Robinson, and won 2 pennants in their 18 years.

Stadium: Silver Stadium (NYM), where the Rochester Red Wings played from 1929 to 1996.

Previous Strat Experience: Five years in the DDL (412-358 record). I played the board game with my two brothers when we were kids.

Favorite Announcer: Vin Scully

Favorite Players: Sandy Koufax, Clayton Kershaw, Jason Heyward, and Nolan Arenado

Baseball Aspirations: To see a game in every major league stadium, and collect every Sandy Koufax card printed during the years he played. I’ve been to a total of 15 stadiums, 12 current and 3 former (current: Mariners, Blue Jays, Orioles, Phillies, Pirates, Rockies, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Red Sox, Cubs, and Nationals; former: Yankees, Mets, Nationals). I have 9 out of the 30 Koufax cards.

Greatest Baseball Memories: My first time watching major leaguers play was the 1997 Hall of Fame game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York. The Dodgers played the Padres, and won 16-8. The next summer I saw my first two real major league games at Shea Stadium.

My overall greatest experience, though, was a trip to Vero Beach, Florida for spring training in 2008. In my opinion, there is nothing quite like spring training and the casual atmosphere, watching the guys play and train on back fields, the access to the players, and the ability to watch prospects play.

2018 World Series, game four at Dodger Stadium with my younger brother, Ben. Although the Dodgers lost the game and eventually the series, Rich Hill’s gem and Yasiel Puig’s 3-run HR will stay with me forever.

Post-season appearances:

2018: South Division Champion, lost in Division Series (vs. Old Town, 4-2)
2019: Second Wild Card, DDL Champion (vs. Centennial Blues, 4-3)
2020: Second Wild Card, Lost in Denver Series (vs. Chattachoochee River Cats, 4-2)

Top Single Season Strat Performances:

  • Jacob deGrom, 2019 (1.89 ERA, 285K, Denver Series MVP)
  • Christian Yelich, 2020 (1.088 OPS, 53 HR, 107 RBI

Best DDL trades:

2016: University Park acquired Christian Yelich, Jimmy Rollins and a 4th round pick for Anthony Gose, Rich Hill and Rusney Castillo
2017: University Park acquired Jacob deGrom and others for Rick Porcello and others

Worst DDL trades:

2017: University Park sent the first overall pick (Francisco Lindor) plus 39th overall pick to Las Vegas for the third overall pick (Kenta Maeda) plus Zach Davies. The Robins have been searching for a SS ever since.
